Sandra DerksRembrandtbox
The third container in the series of twelve has been created by Sandra Derks (1960, the Netherlands). Using the classic Rembrandt style, Sandra Derks has taken two masterpieces by Rembrandt van Rijn and translated them into contemporary artworks containing present-day elements. One painting - to be seen on one side of the art container - shows a reflection of a young Rembrandt's self-portrait in the water of the port and has Amsterdam's portscape as its backdrop. The other side of the art container features her vision on part of the painting 'Bathing Woman' by the same Dutch master. The legs of a female giant stand in the water like two huge beacons, surrounded by ships entering and leaving the Port of Amsterdam. Sandra Derks is an artist who is keen to show today's reality, but with a clear surreal twist. Reality and dreams merge into an imaginative work of art, often inspired by the rich legacy bequeathed by her predecessors.
